I would say yes. It certainly wouldn't change the game experience at all for me and if Anet makes more money, they can afford to hire more people to work on game and skill updates more often.

some people never end to amaze me with how completely destructive their suggestions are. Oleg, you may well have had the worst suggestion ever. What a way to take you out of the game -- a fantasy world of magic and steel, to see modern day product ads.

It bothers me when carebears assume Anet needs more money grabbing opportunities, but this one is pathetic, and while Anet has it's share of f-ups, as an earlier poster mentioned, they do have integrity, and I'm positive this suggestion is well beneath them.

To Oleg, Lanier, and anyone else who feels compelled to give Anet their money for nothing in return, please feel free to send them a personal check, but leave the rest of us out of it.

Well Ideally we would get something in return. If Anet got more money, maybe they would be able to hire enough people to bring back monthly updates and bring us more, larger, game updates. I mean who would support giving Anet money for nothing in return? The whole point is that if Anet gets more money, they could use it on maintaining the game. Besides, although this suggestion may ruin the game for you, it wouldn't change anything for me except possibly give me some more lol's.

And lol at billypowergamer's pic. Great idea right there.

Lanier, get over it. GW is 5+ years old, GW2 is rightfully 95% of Anet's focus, and let's just ride this dying horse until the new pony is ready.

And if in-game product placement gives YOU more lol's (as you said it would), leave everyone else out of it. Man I wish this thread would disappear, nothing good can come from it.

Also, I personally really don't care, as long as it's subtle. I really wouldn't mind if you could buy "coca cola" at the merchant, and it would have the same effect as one of those sparkler bottles. (25% IMS for 10 minutes)

Doesn't hurt me, and only provides more money for Anet to pay for servers, etc.
You sound like another kid talking out of his ass.

This would make the game look like some POS top 100 free mmo list garbage dump.

You know, ads in a game aren't always a bad thing. It really depends on the game.

A while back I played Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and spotted a movie poster for Quantum of Solace while playing in the Theater Level. That obviously fits the game and didn't "ruin" my experience at all.

Obama also had his campaign billboards in Burnout Paradise for a short while.

Of course, as others have said, such advertisements probably aren't even something Anet has considered. They would be way too obvious and would cause more uproar than when Anet charged for costumes.

Yes I'd leave, yes I care and no I don't want to see it.

When ArenaNet have put so much effort into creating an immersive world in Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 especially it would be very counter productive to add modern advertising into it. Running into a town to see huge posters for graphics card brands, game memorabilia and more besides just doesn't sit well in the setting they're going for. That being said there will be some advertising in Guild Wars 2 - just check out the sandwich board advertising Happy Hour at the tavern in the latest blog post. Who knows what extra perks learning the new languages will bring?

In my opinion, in game advertising for real life products rarely works well. The only example I can think of that really worked was Hellgate:London, where the walls of the underground stations were plastered in advertising related to the game and technology (the comics for example). The reason it worked there was because it was accurate for there to be advertising there (Hellgate: London had a post modern setting). You go into the real London underground and the place is covered. It would have felt wrong for there not to be posters on the walls. Didn't save the game though :P

This seems like a troll thread. You've suggested everything people hate about in-game ads, Anet do.

Either you're trolling or have some fixation on giving Anet money like they're suffering and in need. Anet is fine they have hundreds of employees and are working on a highly anticipated sequel. If you want to throw money somewhere to feel good, try a developer that's still indie, or a charity.

This isn't one of those "evil empire" companies. i remember EA was gonna try this with the sims 3, and they didn' in the end due to fan rage. this IS a bad idea, even for the login screen. doesn't matter how much money it brings in the company's reputation will be hurt.

Why is it that every person who plays an MMO is so obsessed with how much money the game makes? Why does everybody like to pretend they are an accountant when it comes to MMO games?

MMOs are the only games were people constantly complain and mutter about "well this game has 2 million subscribers but needs another 1 million to break even, therefore it is a financial failure." No other video game forum talks about sales figures like an MMO forum. I don't hear people on forums for Halo/CoD/Starcraft/Mass Effect going "well I love this game, but the company really seems to be in financial trouble."

Why stress about this? Let A.net, the people whose salaries depend on this, figure this sort of stuff out. After all, they are the only people here with actually numbers to back up any of the wild claims made about how profitable the game is. Anything we say is just speculation.

I was about to go on a long diatribe about how advertisements ruin artistic integrity, but you summed that post up nicely.

Glad to hear they're not going through with it. They tried that thing with The Sims Online and everyone hated it (though the game died because it sucked). This still ain't going to make me remove all EA files from the fire wall's bad list, though.

I'd only want this if they treated the additions like other culture references. Like an emote(many dances see http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Dance) or in non essential dialouge

Hey, i'm actually interested in this thread, so can we please start to pay attention, read the OP's post a few more times, and stop using the word "suggestion" cause no real suggestions were made here? It'd greatly improve my viewing experience. Thanks!

If that's what they need to do to constantly update the game then I'm all for it. But if they have all that advertisement and the game gets updated at the same speed as GW1...they can shove it up their asses.

the benefits of in-game ads for real-world products are two-fold:

1) increased revenue for ANet/NCSoft

2) drives away scrubby role players who give a shit about immersion

They'll certainly need the additional revenue streams from advertising/product placement if they only expect to sell the game to arrogant, elitist dicks....
